Immaculate Contraceptions I, II and III)

2012, Birth Control Pills, Plan B, Copper IUD, Copper Wire, Resin and Silk String, 19 inches

I am interested in making work that embodies the complexities of the inner life. These sculptures are not intended to profane the rosary or to heighten oral contraception to sacred status, but to epitomize the dilemmas around faith and culture by putting the form (contraceptives strung like rosary beads) seemingly at odds with the function (Marian devotion/mediation).  As a Catholic female in the 21st century, they are inescapably autobiographical – representative of my own personal narrative and inner dialogue.
